"Pastellpop" is a video installation consisting of three to seven monitors hanging in an upright position, similar to a picture gallery. Each monitor displays a cat posing in front of a pastel colored backdrop. At first glance these videos appear to be decorative kitsch, made familiar to us through greeting cards and posters that hang in homes and offices.

For centuries, cats have played an important and yet ambivalent role in social culture. They have been worshiped as gods, viewed as demons, and valued as bringers of luck. With their domestication they have found a place in modern homes and often considered to be members of the family.

In the arts, cats are depicted in forms of statues, paintings and photographs. These depictions all have in common that the subject is suspended in a lifeless state, hence becoming an object. “Pastellpop” plays with the transfer of still photography to video. The shift from a still image to a moving image changes its impact altogether. The portrayed cats emancipate themselves from their kitsch-like image with their sleek movements.
